Open Letter to the Mayor, Councillors, and Staff of the City of Brampton

Brampton has a growing problem with illegal advertisement signs, posters, and stickers being placed everywhere — on light poles, stop sign poles, mailboxes, public fences, boulevards, and other public spaces. The result is visual clutter that makes parts of our city look neglected and poorly maintained.

These postings are already prohibited under existing city by-laws , yet enforcement appears weak or nonexistent. Many residents voluntarily remove these signs to help restore the beauty of our neighbourhoods, but new ones appear faster than they can be removed.

Residents are told to report violations, but when illegal signs are literally everywhere, expecting the public to report each one is unrealistic. City staff should already be proactively addressing such an obvious issue.

At the same time, repeatedly sending staff to remove illegal advertisements is also a waste of taxpayers’ money. The real solution is strong enforcement and meaningful penalties that deter offenders from putting them up in the first place — including fines for the businesses benefiting from these advertisements.

Brampton deserves clean, orderly public spaces. Residents should not have to live with constant visual pollution or clean it up themselves.
